Undercover Boss
Employee Unknowingly Tells Undercover Boss He Wants to Take His Job!
In a surprisingly wholesome moment on Undercover Boss, a hardworking employee shares his aspirations to become CEO of the whole company one day.
Joel Manby, the CEO of Herschend Family Entertainment, which is the largest family-owned theme park company in the U.S.A., donned a disguise to work with the rank and file of his corporation to get a better sense of the struggles and opportunities his employees are facing day-to-day. It is here that Manby meets Albert, a young and dedicated employee, who unknowingly divulges his plans to become CEO of the company one day in front of him!

Manby went undercover by growing facial hair and cutting his hair, and took on the alias of John Briggs. During one of his shifts, he was paired up with Albert, whose tasks include sorting and organizing strollers for the park. Albert also shares that he has been working at the park since he was 14 years old, which, at the time of filming, meant he has been working for the company for 6 years.
Albert immediately demonstrates his no nonsense work ethic, and works the undercover CEO Manby to his limits. Next, Albert suggests they head to the break room for lunch and get to know each other a bit more.

“I have all these ideas about theme parks and stuff. It’s not just the place I work. It’s my passion, too.”

“I’ve been working on a couple designs.”
Albert shares his designs for a roller coaster during their break, which showcases innovative designs that have the attractions going under water!
Manby inquires what his ultimate goals are.

“Do you want to go to design school?” asks Manby.
“I come from a pretty poor family. We weren’t well off in any sense, and so, I have to work to go to school. And I’m trying to go to school for work.”
Albert shares that he works 40 hours a week at the park, and also fits in around 10 hours of school a week - he is pursuing a degree in design, all with the goal of staying at Herschend Family Entertainment and working himself up to the CEO position.
“What do you think the ideal job is here?" asks Manby.

"I would like to eventually be a CEO of Herschend Properties," replied Albert.
A bit taken aback, Manby asks if he knows who is CEO currently.
“Joel Manby,” states Albert.

Is this his “hey that’s me” face?
While this may be an awkward conversation, since it can be interpreted as “I want to take your job”, Manby takes this revelation with grace and reflects on how amazing Albert was as his leader for the day.
“That’s something within your control. I just know by seeing the type of person you are…you’ve been fun to work with. I already feel like you’re my boss.”
“At a point, I’m going to have to become your boss again,” quips Albert.

During their one-on-one meeting, Manby shares his admiration for Albert.
“You’re trying to work full-time, trying to go to school at night. You’ve inspired me to start a scholarship program. You’re going to be the first recipient.”
“You’re going to get to go to school full-time so you don’t have to work all day, you don’t have to go to school at night. We’re going to actually PAY YOU 40 hours a week salary to go to school.”

Albert is brought to tears.

“All we ask is that you, you know, during the summer time, when you’re not going to school full-time, come back to work.”

“I’d love to. You can’t keep me away from the place.”
