What Type Of House Could You Buy In England For The Average Home Price In America?
Have you ever wondered how far your money would take you if you went house hunting in the English countryside?
Last year, the average home price in the United States rose by 16.9%, which is the highest year-to-year increase on record for our real estate market. In 2021, the median home sales price for a single-family home was $346,900. With housing inventory still at an all-time low that can’t meet the demand, this is great news for sellers looking to profit and bad news for buyers looking for a good deal.
This got us wondering how far our money would take us if we decided to go house hunting elsewhere. And by elsewhere, we mean looking for a home across the pond in the beautiful English countryside. England uses pounds (GBP) instead of dollars, and the average housing price in the USA equates to approximately £256,000 in the UK. Thanks to “Escape to the Country,” we have a decent understanding of just how far our money would go. For example, take a look at this charming home in Lampeter, Wales, which was listed for about £275,000 ($372,130) back in 2013.

For not much more than the $346,900 median housing price in the United States, you could theoretically become the proud owner of a charming stone-built cottage in the English Countryside, complete with two stories, three decently sized bedrooms, and nearly an acre of beautiful gardens. And the £275,000 listing price doesn’t account for any negotiations or credits the buyers would receive that would lower the final purchase price for the home.
Of course, it’s been nearly ten years since this episode of “Escape To The Country,” was filmed, so home prices may have changed in Britain since then. That said, reports show that the average home price in the UK in 2021 was £276,091, which is still very close to the listing price of the home we toured in the above video clip. Ultimately, lots of factors will go into the purchase price of your next home, but it’s still a fun and interesting experiment to think about how far your budget could take you if you moved somewhere as beautiful as Britain!
