What To Ask Hotels If You’re Booking Travel Now

Travel is finally resuming but there still may be COVID regulations and policies in place. Ask these questions to know what to expect.

As the world is starting to return back to normal, most people are itching to get out of their homes! Especially if you’ve been watching episodes of Escape to the Country, and have been inspired to get out of the city and get some fresh air!

While traveling sounds exactly like the type of breather we need, if you plan to book travel soon, you may want to check out a few things before committing. COVID-19 restrictions vary from state to state, so you’ll want to know what your hotel will and won’t allow and what precautions, if any, they’ll be taking. If you are planning to travel internationally, you can check the Travel Notices page of the CDC website, to see if your specific destination has any restrictions. Check your hotel or resort website or call their reception to get answers to these 7 questions:

Is your hotel operating at full capacity rates?

Whether a hotel can operate at full capacity is up to the local county’s regulations. However, if you are concerned about social distancing, you may want to know the answer to this question.

Will you be offering housekeeping services?

Part of the fun of vacationing is not having to do the cleaning, but some hotels have done away with housekeeping services during the pandemic. Or, it’s up to the guest to request it.

What is your mask policy?

Yet again, this likely will match whatever the local policy is, however, it’s something you’ll want to know. Will you be required to wear masks at places like the pool, lobby, and restaurants? Aside from yourself, if you’re concerned, you may want to ask if staff is required to wear masks.

Are all amenities and recreational spaces open?

If you’re someone who likes to use a gym on vacation -- good for you, by the way -- you’ll want to make sure it’s open. Same goes for other communal spaces like bars, restaurants, and spas.

Are advanced reservations required?

Activities that were once “more the merrier,” may now require reservations. Same goes for restaurants, especially if you prefer outdoor seating.

Is COVID testing required?

This is likely a possibility if you are traveling outside of the US, but different properties in varying states may have rules about required COVID testing. The CDC’s Travel Planner is a great resource to get answers to this question. Simply search by zip code, address or national park to learn if there are any restrictions or testing requirements.

What are the cleaning and disinfection procedures?

Now more than ever, hotels should be paying attention to cleanliness. Things you may want to look out for are their ventilation quality, how much time they require between guest room turnover, and if they have any HEPA filtration systems.
