How Skynests Will Change Air Travel!

Air New Zealand’s promise to provide increased comfort and luxury on ultra long-haul flights inspired us to explore ways to make all your flights more comfortable, no matter the length!

Air New Zealand is changing the way we think about long-haul flights, or flights that last for more than seven hours. The airline is starting by making their ultra long-haul flights, or non-stop journeys that last more than 16 hours, an extra comfortable experience for all of its passengers — including those flying in economy class.

Air New Zealand announced that it planned to equip eight Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets with bunk beds and couches by 2024. These cozy setups will be called Skynests. The carrier says it is the first to offer sleep pods on airplanes and is the first to offer even the lowest paying passengers in economy the option to use them. More space and the comfiest seats on the plane are usually reserved for those flying first class and business class and typically come with a hefty price tag.

The announcement comes as Air New Zealand gears up to offer non-stop flights between Auckland and New York beginning in September of 2022. According to Bloomberg, the trips can last for more than 17 hours. Meanwhile, a competing airline, Qantas, plans to offer non-stop flights between Sydney and New York and Sydney and London by 2025. These flights will cover approximately 10,000 miles in a span of about 20 hours, although this carrier hasn’t unveiled anything like the Skynests yet to help make the time fly.

As people spend more time in the sky, it’s up to the airlines to provide increased creature comforts to make ultra long-haul flights endurable, and dare we say it, even enjoyable. For Air New Zealand, the solution is the Skynests, which will enable passengers to lay flat and stretch out mid-flight.

Of course, we still have some time before passengers will get to test out these Skynests. But whether you are planning to fly for two hours or 20, you deserve to be comfortable! Check out some of our favorite travel accessories you can use to make sure your next flight is as comfortable as possible!
