7 Ideas To Reinvent An Empty Nest Bedroom

Here are 7 practical and stylish ways to reinvent the empty nest bedroom in your home!

The best and worst part of being parents is when the children grow up and it’s time for them to move out of the family home to make their own way in the world. While most parents are proud of the self-sufficient young adults their children have become, many also feel sad to see them go. If you are now an empty nester, you likely have an unused bedroom in your home that once belonged to your child. Instead of leaving it as an untouched shrine to your son or daughter’s childhood, consider remodeling your empty nest room to add value back into your home. Whether your young adult moved away years ago or will be moving out this Fall to attend college, here are 7 practical and stylish ideas to reinvent their old room.

Turn it into a guest room.

Arguably the most obvious idea, you may want to consider turning your son or daughter’s old room into a guest room. Making small changes, such as applying a fresh coat of paint or choosing more sophisticated linens, will make the room feel fresh and grown up. This will be a space where friends and family can comfortably stay when they come to visit, and your child will always have a place to sleep when they want to return home for a while.

Regift it to another child.

Kids Room

If you still have other kids at home, it may be a good time to shuffle around the bedroom assignments. For example, if two of your children were sharing a room, now they may each be able to have their own space. You can remodel the empty nest room to best reflect its new occupant’s taste and personality.

If you were made an empty nester because your son or daughter moved away to start a family of their own, you could also turn the empty space into a nursery or playroom. If you will be babysitting a lot, having a designated space to spend time with the grandkids could be a wonderful addition to your home. Plus, there’s something about your child’s room becoming your grandchild’s room that feels like coming full circle!

Make it a home office.

Over the past year or so, more and more people have started working from home. Working remotely has become a popular and affordable option for many companies, and is likely here to stay. If you will be working from home long term, you may want to make your empty nest room into a home office. Even if you don’t work remotely, you may still benefit from a home office space where you can pay bills, use your computer, and store important documents. Giving yourself a designated space to complete your daily tasks can quickly boost your productivity!

Give your hobbies a space.

Painting Room

Parents make lots of sacrifices for their children. With your kids out of the house, you likely will find yourself with more “me time” to do the activities you love. Now, you have the opportunity to give yourself a gift by turning your empty nest room into a space to enjoy your hobbies. For example, you could turn this space into your personal art or crafting room to complete DIY projects, or a music room to display your instruments and rock out with your spouse.

Say hello to a home gym!

Home Gym

Remember your New Year’s resolution to get in better shape this year? It’s time to get back to that! Gym memberships can get pricey and it’s hard to find the time to go everyday. But when you have a home gym, you have no excuse not to exercise! Arrange your favorite exercise equipment in your empty nest room, and consider adding a quiet corner for yoga or meditation.

Make it the ultimate closet.

Have tiny closets been the bane of your existence? Not anymore! Turn your empty nest room into the ultimate walk-in closet and dressing room. Whether the closet will be shared or for one person, you will have lots of space to spread out as you get ready for the day and will be able to see all your clothes and accessories at once. You will never have to search for buried clothes or dig through wrinkled outfits that have been on your closet floor for who knows how long. As an added bonus, include a washer and dryer to add convenience to laundry day.

All you really need to accomplish your closet renovation is some good shelving and organization. Make sure to include a mirror, table, and chairs for putting on jewelry and shoes, and to see your outfit of the day. With some good lighting and a vanity, you can also have a luxury spot to put on your makeup and do your hair.

Turn it into a home movie theater.

Home Theater

Give yourself the movie theater experience in the comfort of your own home by converting your empty nest room into a home theater. With so much content available on streaming services, you should be able to watch it in comfort and style. Make sure to include some luxurious seating options (preferably reclining with cup holders), a big flatscreen TV, and pick out some sound panels or a modern surround sound system. If you really want to pay homage to movie theaters, consider replacing the flooring with some classic theater carpeting. Last but not least, don’t forget to purchase your own popcorn maker so you have the perfect snack to munch on during the films!
