Cesar Millan Tries to Crack a Curious Case of a Self-Mutilating Dog
The famed dog trainer is baffled by a self-mutilating Belgian Malinois, and calls in a vet for their expertise.
“She was the worst dog she’s ever seen,” claims Cesar Millan.
That’s a bold statement, coming from a guest who has saved multiple dogs throughout her career. Aloysia, a shelter worker who can usually handle most abandoned dogs, had no choice but to bring Janna, a self-mutilating Belgian Malinois, to Cesar to crack the case. Janna scratches until her paws bleed, bites herself, and destroys property everywhere she goes. Cesar has already determined with Aloysia that the dog does not have any neurological issues, but still cannot pin down why this dog is acting in such a destructive manner.
“There hasn’t been one moment of normalcy with her,” says Aloysia.
After digging through the symptoms and actions of Janna, it appears that she is exhibiting an extreme nesting behavior, and there may be a simple biological explanation. Cesar has no choice but to call in a veterinarian to examine the case.
“I think she indicates by our physical exam that she does have a phantom pregnancy,” claims Dr. Elizabeth Nave.
“The only thing is that until you spay her, you’re going to have this every six months,” Dr. Nave continues.
“The vet told us, you know, this is a very typical syndrome of female dogs who have not been spayed, and their natural cycle of procreating is not available to them. Then it creates a false pregnancy,” says Cesar.
Janna’s hormones are signaling she is PREGNANT, and she has no choice but to handle the discomfort and confusion by biting herself and destroying property.
Cesar’s strategy to get Janna re-homed is simple: spay the dog and rehabilitate her behaviors.
